Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano
Back to all placesSituated prominently in Piazza Leonardo Vigo, the Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano in Acireale is a magnificent example of Sicilian Baroque architecture. This grand structure, dedicated to Saint Sebastian, was built between the 17th and 18th centuries following the devastating earthquake of 1693, which laid waste to much of southeastern Sicily.
The construction, which began in 1705 under the direction of several architects, including Pietro Paolo Vasta, was completed in 1768. The basilica’s exterior is a visual feast of intricate carvings and stunning statues, with notable figures such as Saint Sebastian and the Archangel Michael gracing the lavish façade designed by sculptor and architect Paolo Amato. The three-tiered façade is further adorned by elaborate columns and cornices that showcase the skilled craftsmanship of the era. The interior of the basilica is equally impressive, featuring grandiose frescoes that span the nave and the aisles, created by the master painter Pietro Paolo Vasta and his workshop. The frescoes depict scenes from the life of Saint Sebastian, as well as other Biblical episodes, and offer a vivid glimpse into the religious fervor and artistic creativity of the time. The high altar, an exquisite piece of marble work, is crowned by a statue of Saint Sebastian attributed to the local sculptor Leopoldo Anastasi. The basilica also houses a treasure trove of liturgical artifacts, including silverware and sacred vestments, some of which date back to the 18th century. Among its many historical relics is the magnificent pipe organ built by Donato Del Piano in 1757, which remains one of the finest examples of Baroque organ craftsmanship in Sicily.
Throughout its history, the Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano has not only been a center for worship but also a focal point for community gatherings and celebrations. Each January, the Feast of Saint Sebastian draws thousands of devotees who participate in processions and traditional rites, celebrating the saint’s role as a protector against plagues and epidemics.
The basilica’s architectural significance and historical richness have earned it recognition as a national monument. Its ongoing restoration efforts seek to preserve its beauty and integrity for future generations. Visitors to Acireale can find in the Basilica Collegiata di San Sebastiano not only a place of spiritual solace but also a gateway into the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Sicily.
