Orto Botanico di Catania
Back to all places
The Orto Botanico di Catania, established in 1858 by the visionary botanist Francesco Tornabene Roccaforte, is a marvel of horticultural beauty and scientific significance nestled in the heart of Catania.
Covering an expansive 16,000 square meters, the garden is home to over 1,000 plant species, from the exotic to the endemic. It serves as a sanctuary for rare and endangered plants, including remarkable collections of succulents and palms. Throughout its rich history, the garden has provided vital contributions to botanical research and education, housing a herbarium of over 33,000 specimens. In 1862, it was officially recognized as an academic institution by the Kingdom of Italy, cementing its role in advancing botanical sciences.
The Orto Botanico di Catania stands as a testament to Italy’s dedication to preserving natural heritage and promoting scientific inquiry.
