Parco dei Nebrodi

Parco dei Nebrodi, established in 1993, is a breathtaking natural reserve located in the heart of Sicily, Italy. Stretching across 86,000 hectares, it is the largest protected area in Sicily and is part of the UNESCO-recognized Nebrodi-Madonie-Himera Sicaniae Geopark.

This park is a mosaic of rolling hills, lush forests, and pristine lakes, home to a diverse array of flora and fauna. Towering above the landscape is the impressive Mount Soro, which stands at an elevation of 1,847 meters and offers stunning panoramic views.

Rich in history and culture, the Nebrodi Mountains have been inhabited since prehistoric times. Archaeological findings from the Neolithic period can be found throughout the park, including ancient rock carvings and remnants of early settlements. During the Greek and Roman eras, the mountains held strategic importance and were traversed by vital trade routes. The medieval period saw the establishment of numerous monasteries and castles, many of which still stand today, providing a glimpse into the past.

The park’s natural beauty is matched by its rich biodiversity. It is home to rare species such as the Nebrodi fir, the golden eagle, and the elusive wildcat. The lakes Maulazzo and Biviere di Cesarò are critical habitats for migratory birds and are renowned bird-watching spots.

The Nebrodi has also preserved many ancient traditions and customs, notably the production of artisanal cheeses like the Maiorchino and the Provola dei Nebrodi, and the celebration of age-old festivals that reflect the region’s deep cultural heritage.

Parco dei Nebrodi offers a plethora of outdoor activities, ranging from hiking and mountain biking to horse riding and bird watching. Its well-marked trails and paths lead visitors through enchanting landscapes, past centuries-old beech and oak trees, and alongside cascading streams. For those keen on exploring history, the park’s numerous archaeological sites, ancient ruins, and historic villages provide a rich tapestry of the past waiting to be discovered. Whether you are a nature lover, history enthusiast, or adventure seeker, Parco dei Nebrodi presents an unparalleled experience in the heart of Sicily.
