Piazza Università
Back to all places
Situated in the heart of Catania, Piazza Università is a storied square that offers visitors a historical journey through time.
Established in the early 17th century, it remains a focal point of the city’s social and cultural life.
The centerpiece of the piazza is the magnificent Palazzo dell’Università, built between 1696 and 1730 following a devastating earthquake in 1693 that reshaped much of Catania.
This Baroque-style building now houses the administrative offices of the University of Catania, one of Italy’s oldest universities, founded in 1434.
Adorning the square are four iconic lampposts installed in the early 20th century, each telling a mythological tale rooted in the local folklore with bronze sculptures that captivate onlookers. They were designed by local artists Mimì Maria Lazzaro and Domenico Tudisco, adding artistic grandeur to the piazza. During the Risorgimento, the unification process of Italy in the 19th century, Piazza Università was a hub for patriotic gatherings and celebrations. The square also witnessed the turbulent events of World War II, surviving both bombings and subsequent rebuilding efforts.
Over the centuries, Piazza Università has stood as a testament to the resilience and dynamic cultural heritage of Catania, hosting numerous public events, festivals, and academic gatherings, making it not only a hub of education and administration but also a beacon of the city’s enduring spirit.
Today, it continues to be a vibrant meeting place attracting tourists and locals alike, offering a perfect blend of historical reverence and contemporary vitality.
