Tenuta di Fessina

Nestled in the stunning landscape of Sicily, Tenuta di Fessina is much more than a winery; it is a deeply rooted piece of Sicilian heritage. Located along the historically significant SS120, the estate occupies fertile volcanic soil that has been cultivated for centuries.

The vineyards are planted on the slopes of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest and most active volcano, which imparts a unique mineral quality to the wines produced here. The estate is anchored by a meticulously restored 17th-century farmhouse, offering a glimpse into the rustic charm and traditional architecture of the period.

Tenuta di Fessina’s heritage dates back to ancient times when the viticulture practices of the Roman Empire shaped the local agriculture. The area is also rich in remnants of Byzantine and Arabic influence, evident in the terraced landscapes and ancient irrigation systems still in use today.

The current winery was established in 2007 by Silvia Maestrelli, Roberto Silva, and Federico Curtaz, who have upheld the traditions while incorporating modern winemaking techniques to produce award-winning wines praised worldwide.

Walking through the vineyard, one can sense the deep historical layers — from ancient ruins dotting the landscape to the ancient alberello bush vines that have been passed down through generations. The uniquely fertile soil, combined with the climate moderated by the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, has made this area one of Italy’s most revered wine regions, with records of wine production dating back to the Greek settlers in 8th century BC.

Aside from its extraordinary wines, Tenuta di Fessina offers an immersive historical experience. Visitors can explore the ancient stone cellars that have aged countless vintages over the years, participate in wine tastings, and learn about the age-old practices still honored today. The estate serves as a living museum, preserving the rich history of Sicilian winemaking traditions, making it an enticing destination for history enthusiasts and wine connoisseurs alike.
