Tonnara di Scopello

Nestled on the stunning coastline of Sicily, Tonnara di Scopello stands as a testament to the island’s rich maritime heritage. This historical tuna fishery dates back to the 13th century when it was originally built by the noble Sanclemente family. It was later expanded and heavily fortified during the 15th century under the ownership of the influential Spanish Peñalosa family.

The complex includes ancient warehouses, fishermen’s residences, and a quaint chapel, all illustrating the bustling life that once thrived here. In the 18th century, the Florio family, known for their entrepreneurial spirit, took over the Tonnara and introduced advanced fishing techniques, transforming it into one of the most productive and innovative fisheries in the Mediterranean.

The site also played a significant role during World War II, serving as a refuge for locals during air raids.

Today, Tonnara di Scopello is a popular tourist destination that offers a captivating glimpse into Sicily’s past, with its well-preserved structures set against the backdrop of azure waters and dramatic rock formations.
