Ursino Castle

Originally built in the 13th century under the orders of Emperor Frederick II of the Holy Roman Empire, Ursino Castle boasts a rich history woven into the fabric of Italian culture.

Constructed between 1239 and 1250 as a royal fortress, it served as a strategic military stronghold to assert imperial power over the rebellious city-states of Sicily. This formidable structure has survived numerous historical events, including the devastating 1693 earthquake which reshaped much of Catania. Remarkably, the castle withstood the lava flows from the eruption of Mount Etna in 1669, which reached its walls but ultimately preserved its impressive form.

Throughout its history, Ursino Castle has served multiple purposes, from a royal residence to a military garrison, and later as a prison.

Today, it stands as a museum, preserving artifacts and artworks that speak to its storied past and the evolution of the region.

As a testament to medieval architecture and historical resilience, Ursino Castle remains one of Catania’s most significant cultural landmarks, inviting visitors to step back in time and explore the legacy of Sicily’s imperial era.
